Essential Maintenance for Your Living Roof

While a well-installed Green Roof is exceptionally resilient and low-maintenance compared to a traditional garden, it is a living system that requires periodic attention to ensure the long-term health of both the vegetation and the underlying waterproofing layers. Wrexham Flat Roofs provides specialist maintenance services tailored for extensive and intensive systems.

Unrivalled Benefits of a Garden Roof

Installing a Green Roof offers far more than just aesthetic appeal. It provides significant environmental, economic, and practical advantages:

  • Extended Roof Lifespan: The layers of vegetation and soil shield the critical waterproof membrane from harsh UV rays and extreme temperature fluctuations, potentially doubling or tripling its service life.

  • Superior Insulation: The substrate and plants act as a natural insulator, keeping buildings warmer in the winter and significantly cooler in the summer (mitigating the Urban Heat Island Effect). This leads to lower energy bills.

  • Stormwater Management: Green roofs absorb and retain a substantial amount of rainwater, reducing runoff into drainage systems and mitigating local flood risks—a critical benefit in urban areas.

  • Increased Biodiversity: They create vital habitats for pollinators like bees and butterflies, contributing to Biodiversity Net Gain and supporting local wildlife.

  • Noise Reduction: The layers of soil and plants provide excellent acoustic insulation, dampening external noise pollution.

Our Specialist Layered Installation Process

A successful Green Roof relies on the integrity of the layers beneath the vegetation. At Wrexham Flat Roofs, we ensure the foundation is flawless:

  1. Waterproof Membrane: We install a high-performance, root-resistant waterproofing membrane (such as Single Ply or Liquid Roofing) to guarantee complete protection against water ingress.

  2. Root Barrier: An additional root barrier is laid to ensure the plant roots cannot penetrate the underlying structure.

  3. Drainage and Filter Layer: A lightweight drainage board and filter fleece are installed to allow excess water to drain away while preventing the growing medium from washing out.

  4. Growing Medium (Substrate): A special lightweight, nutrient-rich soil mix is installed at the required depth for your chosen system (Extensive or Intensive).

  5. Vegetation Layer: Pre-cultivated sedum mats, wildflower blankets, or specific plant species are laid, completing the living roof system.
